Case of Samuel J. Kent

On this 11 day of September 1879 at P.O. Marshall, County of Madison, State of N.C, Before me John W. Wager (sp?), a special agent of the Pension Office, personally appeared Samuel J. Kent, who, being by me duly sworn according to law, declares that his age is 43 years old, that he resides at 1st Township, County of Madison, State of N.C.

Affiant was born in Greene Co, Tenn. near Paint Rock. Moved then to GreenvilleTenn. Was bound out to Robert Bartley 3 miles from Greenville until affiant was 14 years old, moved then into Cocke Co, and lived with Andrew C. Huff who was made his Guardian Master for him and others by the day to Huff by the month, was there until affiant was about 22 then moved here about 1856 or 57 has lived about here until the war began.

Bartley was a very old family man and did not have any family but two girls, Mahaley Bartley the only one now living. Affiant did not live with Mr. John Woods, he lived in Cocke Co. Tenn. Did not live with any man named Woods in Green Co. or any other place. Lived with Mr. James Allen in Green Co.Tenn, lived in the Huff settlement after affiants marriage when was about 20 or 30 days in Green Co. when his wife died. Then affiant at once moved out here where affiant lived until he left home and went into ?ay and enlisted in the army.

Affiant further states that he has the rheumatism which is over his whole body, that he has pains all the time in his system, that he has generally two attacks in the year very severe in the spring and commencement of winter. The spring attack is the worst and keeps affiant confined longer.

That affiant has been so that he could not feed himself in August four years ago. When his arms and legs were drawn up under him when the spring came he could go about with crutches and it was a year before he could do without crutches. The first attack that affiant had was at Cumberland Gap of the rheumatism it was three years before he was able to do without his crutches or to do anything. Affiant was discharged at Cumberland Gap from Co. C 20 Reg N.C. Mtd Infantry. After discharge lived in Powells Valley near Cumberland Gap one year 1865 lived on Isaac Sharps land Claiborne Co. Tenn. Moved to Chursey River Cocke Co. Tenn on John Enmans land he is dead 3 miles from mouth of Chursey river, lived there two years 1866-1867. Went then to Cosby Creek lived there 4 years. In 1868 or latter part of 1867 lived there from fall of 1867 to February 1871 then moved to in Polk Co. Tenn near the Georgia line of Mury Co. GA 18 miles from Cleveland Tenn, lived there from Feb 1870 until Nov or Dec 1871. Then moved over into this county again with Mr. Wm Dowell but moved from Dodd's land then moved here and has lived here ever since.

That the reason affiant did not make his application for pension earlier than he did was that he did not live in a section until he came here that he could get the necessary evidence that affiant while he lived in Powells Valley affiant had Dr. A. B. Sams who was or has been an asst. surgeon in the Reg the had left the Regiment but remained in Powell Valley while affiant was there. Dr. Patterson was also called once to see affiant there. Then affiant had while he lived on Chursey River, Dr. Moore of Jefferson Co. Tenn who is now in Arkansas. Then when affiant lived on Cosby he had an old Indian doctor called Lawson Maddem (Maddein?) to attend affiant. While he lived in Polk Co. Tenn affiant had Dr. Brinkley who moved then to Huntsville Ala last affiant knew of him.

Then affiant when he came here had Dr. Hardwick and Dr. A. B. Sams attend affiant.

That when affiant lived in the Huff settlement he was thrown from the wagon and a snagg from a corn stalk ran into his right leg in the calf. Which was partially taken out and until all came out he suffered considerably but it got finally got well. Did not have any doctor to attended him when this was near Andy C. Huff.

That there are no members of affiants family that have the rheumatism but heard that his father when young had an attack of the rheumatism. That affiant' s not able to do work. Affiant has not done work since the war that is done heavy work - is a carpenter has had some buildings here put up but hired the most of the work done.

Affiant wants the following witnesses seen. Mr. A. Henderson, hospital stewart, J.J. Guger, John Rodgers, Dr. A. B. Sams, Dr. Frank Davis, James D. Johnson, Hank Bradburn, Jerry Lunsford, Geo W. Freeman and Stephen Roberts, Pinse Roberts, Ephriam Elder, W. F. Runyan, John Campbell, E. P. Goforth, A. L. Payne, Hiram Rice, Wm Caywood, Joseph White.

Affiant further states that he denies having any rheumatic pains in his knees after he married his first wife that he has and before he enlisted in the army.

That affiant's first wife's father and family Nathaniel Shelton moved to Indiana. Can not say what part.
